Revered Saint Geeta Gyaneshwar Dr. Shri Swami Divyanand ji Maharaj "Bhikshu” realized the need for better health care services for the underprivileged and initiated a Community Health Awareness Mission called ‘Jan Swasthye Jagran Abhiyan’ way back in 1975. Further, to his spiritual convictions and vision, Swami Ji along with his followers spearheaded the movement of voluntary services in the early nineteen- seventies by organizing various free medical and general health camps, blood donation camps and cataract eye camps being a part of it. Since then, a large scale relief work for the poor and destitute has gained great momentum and enthusiasm.
These selfless efforts were gradually converged into establishing a formal institution dedicated towards community welfare.
With this fervent vision and self devotion, the foundation stone of Manthan Eye Healthcare Foundation (MEHF) was laid in early 2013 and formalized in 2017 under the direction and blessings of Swami Ji.
Being an ardent devotee of Swami Ji, the reins of MEHF were entrusted to Dr Sumit Grover, a well known ophthalmologist and he was nominated as the founder patron member of the foundation. Swami Ji’s principles and ideology have continued to be the guiding strength for the foundation. The name of the foundation amalgamated the core principles of self less service focused on ‘social welfare’ derived from the samudra manthan (lit. churning of the ocean) which is one of the best-known episodes in the Hindu philosophy narrated in the Mahabharata. The samudra manthan explains the origin of ‘amrita’ the nectar of immortality a symbol of prosperity with Good Health.
MEHF is a registered not for profit and non-government charitable organization with a mission to provide standard eye health care services to those segments of the society who have only limited access to eye health care due to low income, disability and other limitations; by organizing various screening and medical eye camps across Haryana and neighboring states.
With the vision to emerge as an organization par excellence in the field of community eye health care, the MEHF family today has over 1,000 members who are working constantly for promotion of health care activities, to raise awareness about the importance of healthy vision among masses. Till now around ten thousand people have been screened for eye diseases like Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma .To fulfill its commitment towards preventive vision health, various eye health care providers and not for profit organizations have been actively engaged and recruited for the cause. `MEHF has recently collaborated with Ansal University establishing Sushant – MEHF centre of excellence for Glaucoma Screening for subsidized screening of at risk/ suspected glaucoma patients detected during camp screenings to halt the progress of this silent killer of vision. In this journey for excellence, foundation has received many awards and appreciation of their efforts and still has a long way to go.
